250th Year Anniversary:

Two hundred and fifty years ago, a group of imperfect human beings wrote and signed an extraordinary document. The Declaration of Independence was far more than a political statement. It was an act of conscious courage—a bold declaration that the American colonies would separate themselves from the tyranny of King George III and the British Crown, despite knowing that failure could cost them their lives.

Its signers pledged “our Lives, our Fortunes, and our sacred Honor” to a revolutionary idea that had rarely been imagined and never fully realized: that all people possess inherent dignity and the right to participate and shape their own future. From that audacious act emerged what has often been called the Great American Experiment—the ongoing effort to build a nation in which liberty, self-government, and the rule of law would ultimately rest not in the hands of a monarch, but in the hands of its citizens.

Over the past two and a half centuries, we have witnessed every generation inheriting the extraordinary promise of independence along with its profound responsibility. The American Revolution was indeed a brutal and violent struggle for political freedom. Yet it was also preceded by a revolution of ideas- a remarkable shift in human consciousness. Concepts such as inherent human dignity, individual liberty, self-governance, and the pursuit of happiness challenged centuries of accepted hierarchy and absolute rule.

The authors of the Declaration

The authors of the Declaration were imperfect human beings who, at least in part, recognized that they themselves fell short of the ideals they proclaimed. Yet they dared to articulate those ideals anyway, aspiring to lift not only a nation but the human spirit itself toward greater freedom, justice, and possibility.

Since then, each generation has celebrated the freedoms won in 1776 while also confronting the ongoing work of preserving them. Freedom is never self-sustaining. It requires citizens willing to cultivate the wisdom, courage, discernment, and character necessary to uphold it. In 1861, when the Union stood on the brink of collapse, Abraham Lincoln appealed not merely to political loyalty, but to something deeper within the human heart. He called upon “the better angels of our nature,” reminding Americans that the preservation of liberty ultimately depends not only on laws and institutions but also on the qualities of consciousness we choose to embody.

The Founders secured our political independence because they understood that self-government requires self-governing people. They knew that freedom could not survive on laws and institutions alone. It would ultimately depend on the character, wisdom, and participation of ordinary citizens. The Great American Experiment was never intended to be a finished achievement, but an ongoing endeavor—one that every generation would be called to renew.

That unfinished work now belongs to us.

That unfinished work now belongs to us. The enduring challenge of every generation is to cultivate the inner independence that makes outer freedom possible. As we commemorate the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, we stand at another crossroads in our nation’s story. We are invited not only to celebrate the courage of those who came before us but also to recommit ourselves to the ongoing work of becoming the kind of people capable of sustaining their highest ideals: life, liberty, human dignity, equal justice, and the enduring truth that all people are created equal. We are called to develop the inner capacities required to sustain freedom. Real and lasting social transformation has always begun with inner transformation. A society cannot become wiser than the consciousness of the people who create it. We cannot maintain our freedoms or rise alone, just as a consciousness-raising group can only reach the heights of its lowest member,

As I write this blog post and accompanying newsletter, I am aware that many of us deeply understand that this Fourth of July is different. Our eyes are opening to the awareness that we are being called moment to moment to say ‘yes’ to our better angels to preserve the freedoms for which previous generations lost their lives. Many people are celebrating to show gratitude, while others are not celebrating to make a statement; either way, I surmise we are all deeply concerned.  Around kitchen tables and across social media, people are asking difficult questions about democracy, freedom, truth, responsibility, and the future of our country.

Rather than adding another voice to the noise, I find myself returning to the work that has guided my life as a psychotherapist. For more than twenty years, I have been developing Celestial Psychology® and, more recently, theLiving Field Guide Books 1 – 6: Twelve Codes of the Evolutionary Trajectory. These are not political principles. They are developmental capacities that help us become better, brighter, and wiser—on purpose and with purpose. More importantly, they offer a common ground from which people with differing backgrounds, beliefs, and political perspectives can begin. Before we can resolve our deepest disagreements, we must first cultivate the qualities that make thoughtful dialogue, genuine discernment, and conscious participation possible. I believe this is one of the most important callings of our time.

The Twelve Codes aka the Twelve “C”s of Consciousness Raising

The Twelve Codes of the Evolutionary Trajectory—sometimes affectionately called the Twelve “C’s” of Consciousness Raising—offer practical, developmental capacities for cultivating the character and consciousness the Founders understood were essential to sustaining outward freedom, sovereignty, and self-government. They begin with the willingness to embrace Change while preserving what deserves Continuity. Competition challenges us to refine our strengths and discover what we are capable of becoming. Commitment anchors our purpose. Coherence and Congruency help us align our thoughts, values, and actions so that we live what we claim to believe. Complexity expands our capacity to navigate an increasingly interconnected world. Creativity invites us to imagine new possibilities, while Compassion reminds us of our shared humanity. Cooperation and Community teach us how to flourish together, for throughout nature—from molecules and living cells to ecosystems, civilizations, and perhaps even the larger cosmos—enduring evolution depends on increasingly sophisticated forms of collaboration. Communication then becomes more than the exchange of information; it becomes the conscious transmission of wisdom. And quietly holding them all together is the hidden Code of Codes: Consideration—the capacity for thoughtful discernment, without which none of the others can reach their fullest expression.

The Founders understood that the continuation of freedom would depend on far more than constitutions, courts, elections, or governments. Ultimately, it would depend on the character and capacities of its citizens, their willingness to practice discernment, reflection, responsibility, and conscious participation. As history has repeatedly shown us, freedom is never self-sustaining. It must be renewed by every generation, not only through courageous action but also through the continual cultivation of wisdom, character, discernment, and consciousness. That is why I believe there has never been a more important time to embrace what I call the Revolution in Consciousness.

The future of democracy appears to depend less on our attempts to convince one another of what to think and more on our willingness to cultivate the developmental capacities that enable us to think, discern, communicate, and participate more wisely together despite our differences. There has never been a more important time to become the kind of citizenry capable of sustaining freedom. By intentionally developing the Twelve Codes, we strengthen our capacity for independent thought, thoughtful dialogue, intellectual humility, discernment, and conscious participation. These qualities cannot eliminate disagreement, nor should they. Rather, they help us resist indoctrination, ideological rigidity, fear-based manipulation, and the suppression of genuine inquiry, the very forces that have repeatedly threatened free societies throughout history.

The Revolution in Consciousness is inherently nonviolent.

The Revolution in Consciousness is inherently nonviolent. It is not a revolution against one another but a revolution within ourselves. When we become more thoughtful than reactive, more discerning than manipulated, more compassionate than divided, and more committed to truth than to certainty, we transform not only our own lives but also begin to transform the Living Field in which our families, communities, cultures, and future generations evolve.

This is the invitation before our nation. It is also the invitation before humanity.

This Independence Day, may we celebrate not only the freedoms we have inherited but also the consciousness required to preserve them. And may we recommit ourselves to the ongoing work of becoming better, brighter, and wiser—on purpose and with purpose, one day, one conscious decision, and one willing choice at a time.

If this message speaks to you, please share it. The Revolution in Consciousness does not spread by force or ideology. It grows, one willing heart, one willing conversation, and one willing community at a time. I invite you to explore the Twelve Codes with your family, friends, book clubs, and civic organizations, and to join us as the journey continues through upcoming paperback workbooks, gatherings, podcasts, and study groups. Together, we can become better, brighter, and wiser—on purpose and with purpose.

Calling all the Willing Ones…

The future is asking something of us.

Let’s answer this call together.
